WAPDA union reached settlement benefits for the workers

Pakistan WAPDA Hydro Electricity Central Labour Union (PWHECLU) has reached a settlement agreement through their collective bargaining to up-grade the pay scale for Electricity Meter Readers from BPS-5 to BPS -7 and include a generation allowance for the generation staff employed in Hydel and Thermal Power Station. Khurshid Ahmed, PWHECLU General Secretary said that the union is confident that an agreement will be reached through concerted struggle. He also said that earlier mutual negotiation and consultation has been made between the union and the management for the contract workers. Under the settlement agreement, 33,000 contract workers will be eligible for pension rights. The union recognised that behind this success story after a long struggle defending and promoting workers' rights, there is the looming crisis of power shortage due to financial difficulties being faced by the National Public Utility. The union called upon the government to ensure that the power shortage problem would be resolved and quality public services would be maintained. The recent National Conference of Meter Readers, Bill Distributors and Meter Supervisors of Power Wing held on 21 January 2009 at Bakhtiar Labour Hall passed a resolution that the union demanded the government to take special measures for raising electricity generation to overcome the menace of load shedding and get lawful dues amounting to Rs 250 billion.
